Short Description

Dr. Giudici has developed a device (sheath) and method that improves the ease of pacemaker implantation and AV nodal ablation. The sheath will allow this procedure to be done faster and with fewer supplies. Also, this would reduce the number of patient access points down to one, relieving the patient of discomfort and complications. This technology leads to more efficient procedures and reduces hospital related expenses.

Background Information

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, occurring in 1 of 16 adults, costing the US economy $444 billion yearly. Mortality rates from heart disease have been steadily rising from 1990 to 2013 (12.3 to 17.3 million deaths per year). Cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure are common and dangerous myocardium diseases, treated by implanting a pacemaker. The global pacemaker market size was $4.9 billion in 2015 and is forecasted to increase. For over two decades, the pacemaker implantation method has consisted of two separate procedures: from the groin (AV nodal ablation) and upper chest (pacemaker implantation). This requires increased surgery and patient recovery time, and additional bed rest after a groin puncture procedure.
